Men perform for St Andrew Parish Church

Men Perform for Christ will be held at the St Andrew Parish Church, Half-Way Tree, on Sunday, October 2, starting at 5 p.m. The line-up features singers, choirs and drummers.

The performers include tenor Commander John McFarlane, Seventh-day Adventist Men’s Chorale, the male chorale of the University Singers, the Jamaica Constabula­ry Force Men’s Chorale, Dr Mario Guthrie (who performs under the stage name Mario Evon), Kevin Williams, trumpeter and vocalist Dwight Richards, Dominic Gobourne, Rev Leslie Mowatt, St Andrew Panners & Drummers, Hanif Lallo, Canon Sirrano Kitson; Audley Davidson, Warren Harris, Tony Patel, the choir master of Kingston College and many more.

Proceeds from the concert will assist in the continued upgrading of the physical plant of the 350-year-old church. The St Andrew Parish Church was declared a national monument by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust in 2003 and the historic site has been the silent witness to many significan­t events that have taken place in Jamaica over the past three centuries.

With late reggae legend Peter Tosh being honored this October with the opening of a new museum located at the Peter Tosh Square at the Pulse Centre in New Kingston it was recently announced that his famed backing band, Word, Sound and Power, will reunite with original members at a benefit concert following the event.

Original members include Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespear­e, Mikey Chung, Steve Golding, Robbie Lyn, Keith Sterling, Carlton ‘Santa’ Davis, George ‘Fully’ Fullwood, Carlton Smith, Derrick Lara and Junior Moore of The Tamlins, and Donald Kinsey, as well as session musicians Dean Fraser and Nambo Robinson. Formed in 1976 as Tosh’s official backing group, Word, Sound and Power toured with Tosh in the United States and Europe and played during the iconic One Love Peace concert in 1978

Performers who have been confirmed for the concert so far include Tarrus Riley and KyMani Marley. Other distinguis­hed invited guests include Sly (right) and Robbie.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Minister of Informatio­n, Youth, Sports & Culture Olivia Grange, Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett, and Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller.

When the Peter Tosh Museum officially opens its doors, visitors will be able to see a large collection of neverbefor­e-seen Tosh memorabili­a, as some of the treasures will be displayed to the public for the first time. Visitors will also be able to relive aspects of the non-conformist, futuristic and abundantly creative Tosh experience through sizzling audio and video recordings, as well as iconic artifacts – including his M16 guitar and beloved unicycle that became one of his favorite means of transporta­tion. Also available will be exclusive merchandis­e for sale to the public.

The museum project is a jointventu­re collaborat­ion between the Peter Tosh Estate, Pulse Investment­s Ltd, and Andrea Marlene Brown.
