The following events took place on October 11 in the years identified:
1987:The World Bridge Federation’s 28th Bermuda Bowl and sixth Venice Cup Championships get under way at the Mallards Beach Hotel in Ocho Rios with host country Jamaica making a successful start in both the men’s and women’s championships against Canada and Argentina, respectively. The men’s team defeats Canada 16 points to 14 after trailing their opponents at the end of the first session. The ladies disposed of Argentina 19-11 after taking an early lead at the end of the first session.
1990:three The dedication of teachers is rewarded when Victoria Mutual Building Society presents them with cheques valued at J$5,000 each. The scholarships are to assist the teachers who are all pursuing degree courses at the University of the West Indies. All three teachers have been teaching for 10 years or more. The recipients of the 1990 VMBS Teacher’s Scholarship are Ulrica Clarke, guidance counsellor of Bog Walk Secondary; Redva Ferril, senior teacher of Gregory Park All-Age; and Raymond Munroe, vice-principal of Calabar All-Age.
