THE STATISTICAL Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) provides valuable services to the national and global publics through the timely collection, analysis, and publication of statistical information relating to the social, economic, commercial, industrial, and general activities of the people of Jamaica. Statistics play a vital role in every area of human activity. Statistics are critical for proper decision making in business and government. The role of statistics in planning for the growth and development of our nation should never be underestimated.

Jamaica is proud to have had the services of an agency dedicated to the collection, analysis, and dissemination of statistics for 70 years, first as the Bureau of Statistics, then the Department of Statistics, and since 1984, as the Statistical Institute of Jamaica. STATIN continues to play a vital role in national economic and social activities as the agency that keeps its fingers on the social, economic, commercial, and industrial pulse of the nation and its people.

In addition to capturing data on the social and economic activities of Jamaicans, the very act of periodically measuring the size, demographics, and other salient features of the population is critical for national planning.

It is against this background that I congratulate the management and staff of STATIN on reaching the major milestone of 70 years of existence and vital service to the nation. The work of previous heads of the agency and former staff has been instrumental in STATIN evolving into a modern operation for efficient data collection, analysis, and publication.
