Youth urged to take mes­sage of good health to their peers

NCOURAGE YOUR peers to prac­tise a healthy life­style and make good nu­tri­tion choices” was the mes­sage from state min­is­ter in the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion, Youth and In­for­ma­tion, Floyd Green, to the stu­dents who at­tended the re­cent Youth Fo­rum at the St An­drew Par­ish Church.

He was ad­dress­ing the ses­sion staged by the Na­tional Child Month Com­mit­tee (NCMC), where more than 200 stu­dents at­tended the fo­rum, which in­cluded pre­sen­ta­tions on var­i­ous top­ics un­der the theme ‘Healthy Chil­dren Build a Stronger Na­tion’.

Green said it was im­por­tant for stu­dents to keep the conversation go­ing around the theme.

“It is very im­por­tant that you don’t only read the theme, you don’t only par­tic­i­pate in the dra­matic pieces, but that you in­ter­nalise the mes­sage that is be­ing con­veyed,” he said.


“We have to take stock of what we eat, such as the fast food. As much as we en­joy them, we have to en­sure that we have a bal­anced diet. Good nu­tri­tion is crit­i­cal to main­tain­ing good health.”

Green added, “You are the ones who can con­vince your peers to change the way in which they are liv­ing. You have the power to ef­fect change in ev­ery area of your lives. You have the power to cre­ate a bet­ter Ja­maica, the power to cre­ate a bet­ter school, and the power to cre­ate a bet­ter fu­ture.”

The Queen’s School pre­sented a dra­matic piece on the topic ‘The Rel­e­vance and Im­por­tance of Nu­tri­tion to Main­tain­ing Stu­dents of The Queen’s School give a dra­matic pre­sen­ta­tion on the topic ‘The Rel­e­vance and Im­por­tance of Nu­tri­tion to Main­tain­ing Good Health’ at the Na­tional Child Month Com­mit­tee’s Youth Fo­rum, held re­cently at the St An­drew Par­ish Church Hall.

Good Health’; stu­dents of Char­lie Smith High spoke about ‘The Rel­e­vance and Im­por­tance of Phys­i­cal Ac­tiv­ity to Main­tain­ing Good Health’,

while Wolmer’s Boys’ School fo­cused on ‘The Rel­e­vance and Im­por­tance of Men­tal Well­ness to Main­tain­ing Good Health’.

The min­is­ter, who was the

guest speaker at the Youth Fo­rum, com­mended the NCMC for en­gag­ing the young peo­ple in dis­cus­sions around is­sues that are rel­e­vant to their well-be­ing.

Youth Month is be­ing ob­served in Novem­ber un­der the theme ‘E=MC2 En­er­gis­ing Youth’.

The Youth Fo­rum re­mains

one of sev­eral ac­tiv­i­ties or­gan­ised by the NCMC, which, since its in­cep­tion in 1953, has spear­headed the an­nual ob­ser­vance of Child Month.
