Youth urged to take message of good health to their peers

NCOURAGE YOUR peers to practise a healthy lifestyle and make good nutrition choices” was the message from state minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Informatio­n, Floyd Green, to the students who attended the recent Youth Forum at the St Andrew Parish Church.

He was addressing the session staged by the National Child Month Committee (NCMC), where more than 200 students attended the forum, which included presentati­ons on various topics under the theme ‘Healthy Children Build a Stronger Nation’.

Green said it was important for students to keep the conversati­on going around the theme.

“It is very important that you don’t only read the theme, you don’t only participat­e in the dramatic pieces, but that you internalis­e the message that is being conveyed,” he said.

BALANCED DIET

“We have to take stock of what we eat, such as the fast food. As much as we enjoy them, we have to ensure that we have a balanced diet. Good nutrition is critical to maintainin­g good health.”

Green added, “You are the ones who can convince your peers to change the way in which they are living. You have the power to effect change in every area of your lives. You have the power to create a better Jamaica, the power to create a better school, and the power to create a better future.”

Good Health’; students of Charlie Smith High spoke about ‘The Relevance and Importance of Physical Activity to Maintainin­g Good Health’,

while Wolmer’s Boys’ School focused on ‘The Relevance and Importance of Mental Wellness to Maintainin­g Good Health’.

The minister, who was the

guest speaker at the Youth Forum, commended the NCMC for engaging the young people in discussion­s around issues that are relevant to their well-being.

Youth Month is being observed in November under the theme ‘E=MC2 Energising Youth’.

The Youth Forum remains

one of several activities organised by the NCMC, which, since its inception in 1953, has spearheade­d the annual observance of Child Month.
