Design a Dress 2017 competition

-

ON NOVEMBER 14, destination wedding planner Helen G kicked off the 2017 Design a Dress Competition.

The competition challenges designers to create a themed wedding dress. Last year’s beach-themed competition was won by Yolande Bennett, who received $100,000 cash as well as a full feature in The Gleaner’s Flair Magazine.

This year, the competition is already set to be bigger, and the designers are in for a treat. In keeping with the Caribbean feel, the theme for the 2017 competition will be Tropical Fantasy.

According to Helen G, “Most women dream about their wedding dress before they even meet their Prince Charming, so we are definitely excited to see these dresses come to life. This competition is about supporting entrepreneurs like myself, and I am definitely looking forward to this year’s event.”

She noted that the organisers are looking to add a number of elements to the programme, which will include a photoshoot with the designers, and additional prizes with inclusion in the fashion show to showcase other designs, as well as a very detailed mentorship programme.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME

The mentorship programme being undertaken focuses on the long-term success of the designers, ensuring that they get the necessary support needed to launch a successful career.

The Design a Dress series challenges designers to design and sew a wedding dress in eight weeks. The completed dress should be submitted by January 6, 2017. According to Managing Director of FYI Consultancy Paula Pinnock, “This competition is a remarkable opportunity for any designer seeking to break into the very competitive fashion industry or one who wants to reengage the market. The exposure that they will receive from this competition will provide incredible opportunities. We are encouraging all designers to enter.”

Finalists in the Design a Dress competition will participate in the Helen G Bridal Fashion Show on January 29, at the Spanish Court Hotel Worthington.

Sponsors include: FYI Consultancy Group, Flair Magazine, Jamaica Wedding Photo, White Lotus, Sleek, Jamaica Wedding Photography, The Production Box, and Supreme Systems.
