-

THE CONSTRUCTION Project Management Course at Jamaica College (JC) is well underway, providing 14 select fifth and sixth form students with the ‘ins and outs’ of construction project management.

Dr Claire Sutherland, senior director, international and institutional linkages at the University of Technology, acted as overall coordinator for the first semester, providing a detailed overview of a construction project, the role and functions of a construction project manager, the importance of good communication, administration, timing/scheduling, cost, quality and, most importantly, safety and security on site.

Sutherland also managed to secure guest speaker Dr Garfield Young, dean of the Faculty of the Built Environment, for his input. He spoke on the various disciplines within his field, as well as geomatics and the Jamaica Building Code.

After Sutherland’s comprehensive sessions, which outlined the “nuts and bolts” of the course, she ushered in Doris Gross, architect and Auto CAD specialist (Computer Aided Design), who imparted her considerable knowledge and expertise to the students. Gross commented that the students were very interested, motivated and highly receptive to her weekly discourse on architecture and all its many and varied aspects, and that she could only see continued enthusiasm ensuing for its duration.

The course continues into 2017, with civil engineering up next, followed by the role of the land surveyor, as well as quantity surveying.

Sponsored by Gore Developments Limited they receive regular updates. GDL’s chairman and JC old boy Phillip Gore is so far delighted with the progress.
