The following events took place on January 18 in the years identified:

1955: St Andrew Old Girls defeat St Andrew High School 6-1 in the opening game of the 1955 Women’s Hockey League competitio­n at Cecelio Lodge. The game is a one-sided affair with the winners pressing most of the time. The old girls play without a goalkeeper. Outside right Myrna Brown opens the scoring for the old girls at about 10 minutes after the start and is soon followed by centre forward Madge East, who scores twice in succession in the first half. Near the end of the half, inside left Marjorie Fennell makes it 4-0. The old girls go on the offensive immediatel­y on the resumption, and Madge East registers her third goal. Daisy Hernandez and Marjorie Fennell score the other two goals for the winners. Centre forward Pam Madison-Jones scores for the high school.

1971:union A four-day trade seminar for some 40 worker/students from eight affiliated unions of the Independen­t Trade Union Advisory Council (ITAC) opens at 2 William Street, Kingston. This is the first of two such seminars scheduled by ITAC for similar workers, and the second will open later this week in Savanna-la-Mar. The seminar is opened by Chris Lawrence, general secretary of ITAC, and addresses are given by Roderick Francis, president of ITAC, and Adolph Bonilla, a representa­tive of the Christian Confederat­ion of Latin American Trade Unions. Bonilla will be among the lecturers taking part in the seminar. Other lecturers will be drawn from the central executive of ITAC.
