Three Miles River aim for dominance
THERE IS no three ways about it, Westmoreland-based Three Miles River FC is aiming to become the dominant club in the west, and that means that they must first unseat the overwhelming parish standard-bearers Reno FC and the undoubted best club in local football, Montego Bay United (MBU).
It’s a lofty bit of ambition posited by the upstart club, but it is a dream that their coach Carl ‘Longlife’ Palmer believes can happen with time and careful planning.
“We are a little-known club with great ambition. Being champions of Westmoreland gives us some amount of inner belief for a very long journey, and I think we have the stomach to last,” Palmer said.
Three Miles River has risen through the ranks of Westmoreland’s domestic leagues to be crowed champions of the parish in 2016, with a controversial win over Roaring River in the final, to now be plying their trade in the Charley’s JB Rum Western Confederation Super League.
Currently third in Zone One on six points from five matches, Three Miles River have a long way to go before challenging for the Super League title, but it’s not far-fetched to see them growing in stature to one day be competing on the same level as MBU-FC and Reno FC.
“It is strange that Westmoreland as a parish that produce, so many talented young players has not seen more than one club at a time in the Premier League,” said Palmer, “and we intend to help change that.”
On Sunday, Three Miles River displayed their best form with a comprehensive 3-0 win over defending champions Granville FC with goals from St Elizabeth Technical High School central defender Clifton Woodbine in the 8th minute. Then, Chevon Morris and an Akeem Edwards’ own goal in the 22nd and 87th minutes, respectively, sealed a fine victory.
“The club is on the right path. There is a settled management system in place and we have our own field, and with determination and serious planning, I am sure not long from now, we will be in the Premier League alongside the best from the west,” noted Palmer.
On Saturday, they welcome Clarks Town FC (10 points) to their den in the hope of replicating Sunday’s stellar performance against the Trelawny-based club in a 3:00 p.m. clash.
