Hanover Charities opens new computer lab
THE CHARITABLE arm of Round Hill Hotel, Hanover Charities, recently opened a newly constructed computer laboratory at the Church Hill Primary School in Santoy, Hanover.
The construction of the $2million facility began last September and was completed within 10 weeks. It was among scores of projects financed by the charity in 2016, after it raised a record $44 million via Round Hill’s Annual Sugar Cane Ball in February last year. Of that sum, $37 million was put towards scholarships for tertiary students and annual grants for schools and communitybased organisations in Hanover.
“A part of the reason Hanover Charities was able to raise so much funds to aid in the installation of computer labs was largely due to the contribution of the Falkenberg family,” Casserly explained. “Mr and Mrs Falkenberg celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and instead of asking for gifts, friends and family donated towards the charity.”
She said the Falkenberg family, who are shareholders at Round Hill, specifically asked that the funds go towards building computer labs across Hanover. She said that after donating 12 computers to the school last summer, she discovered that the institution was without an appropriate location to house them.
“After learning that the teachers would have to give up their meeting and break room, Hanover Charities decided to build a new computer room instead,” Casserly said.
APPLAUDED EFFORTS
Principal of Church Hill Primary School, Delano Murdock, applauded the efforts of the charity and expressed gratitude on behalf of the school community.
“Hanover Charities is a godsent not only to Church Hill Primary, but schools and organisations in and around Hanover. They have contributed significantly to Hanover and we at Church Hill are thankful for their love and support,” he said.
Councillor of the Green Island division and board member, Marvell Sewell, who helped to coordinate the project, was also overjoyed with the support given by Hanover Charities.
“I strongly believe in education and I believe that Hanover Charities is doing a great job at uplifting the school and the community on a whole. I am happy to be a part of this project and I feel proud of where Church Hill is coming from to where it is now, as we’ve never had a computer room in the past,” Sewell said.
