THIS DAY IN OUR PAST

The following events took place on January 25 in the years identified:

-

1955:

The Society of Medical Technologists (West Indies) is recently founded with its registered office at the Pathology Department, University College of the West Indies. K.R. Hill, professor of pathology, is elected president of the society; L.S. Grant, senior lecturer in bacteriology, and N. March, assistant government bacteriologist, are the vice-presidents. J. Campbell, laboratory superintendent of the UCWI Pathology Department, is chairman of the society. The society aims at the training and certification of all medical technologists in the Caribbean to a standard equivalent to that required by the Institute of Medical Technologists, London, to promote the development and interchange of technical knowledge among its members, and to encourage the formation of the society in other West Indian territories.

1955:

A contract is awarded by the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation for the erection of a new bridge at Slipe Pen Road and Torrington Road. The present bridge, declared unsafe for heavy vehicular traffic some time ago by the city engineer, will be demolished within the next few days, and the contractors, Messrs Creary and Taffe, will begin construction of the new bridge immediately after that. Traffic will be diverted from that section of Slipe Pen Road while work is in progress.

1988:

Failure by the University Hospital to pay up its income tax recently leads to the detention of nearly $250,000 worth of critical drugs on the wharves, The Gleaner has been told. Carl Davies, hospital administrator, tells The Gleaner that the matter is now resolved and the drugs are being cleared. It is understood that drugs, including relaxants and antibiotics for treating children, arrived at the wharves in December 1987 from the United States, Germany and the United Kingston, but could not be cleared because the University Hospital was in arrears in its income tax payments and, therefore, had no tax-compliance certificate.
