Support Fitz in bank fight
THE EDITOR, Sir: THE CURRENT bill now before Parliament tendered by South St Catherine Member of Parliament Fitz Jackson is long in coming as it seeks to protect depositors’ funds. The then backbencher on the side of the People’s National Party government in 2013 sought to table this private member’s motion seeking to attract the attention of the Government regarding the excessive fees being charged to depositors by licensed financial institutions.
Excessive charges are being levied on just about every transaction made on their accounts. What is cause for concern are the fees being charged to accounts classified as being dormant. It is unthinkable that when depositors choose to save without disturbing their savings, they are actually charged a fee, hence gradually depleting already minimal funds.
LEND SUPPORT
As People’s National Party Youth Organisation members, we are satisfied that amid the many provisions of this private member’s bill, substantial protection will be accorded to depositors.
It is imperative that we all, as young people, and indeed the broader society, lend support to and encourage Mr Jackson for having the courage to challenge the banks on our behalf.
Victory requires all the other 62 MPs and 21 senators to ensure that this bill is passed into law without undue delay. In this regard, the PNPYO urges all its members and well-thinking Jamaicans to urge their MPs to give support when the bill comes up for voting.
