Digicel to show support to Green Pond High following student’s murder
IT WAS initially meant to sensitise students at Green Pond High School in St James, on how to practise safe online behaviour, but now, following the gruesome murder of 15year-old student, Shineka Gray, Digicel will pay special respects and condolences to the entire school community.
Before hearing of Gray’s murder, Digicel had plans to include Green Pond, along with Excelsior High and Bridgeport High schools, in their Safer Internet Day activities, set to get under way today, but could not get confirmation from the school until shortly after the teenager’s death.
“We had approached Green Pond about two weeks ago. In fact, on the very day we were confirming, we were unaware that the student was from the school. It wasn’t until the evening on the news that I [realised],” Digicel’s Head of Public Relations Elon Parkinson told The Gleaner.
“Now that we know, the truth is that we are going to place special emphasis on Green Pond tomorrow (Tuesday). Our team from west, they’ll be there tomorrow to give a hand in fellowship and support, moreover to let them know that we understand the difficult time they are going through. It will take that flavour as well, not just to go down there and talk about Safer Internet Day.”
TAKING POSITIVE ACTION
According to Parkinson, Safer Internet Day, themed ‘Be the change: Unite for a better Internet’, is an opportunity for persons to commit to creating awesome online brands for themselves, through safer Internet use.
He said that each young person can, and should, take positive action and consciously cultivate a digital footprint they can be proud of.
“We are hoping to reach more children this year. The wider public wants to be part of the change to make the Internet a better place and we are thankful for their commitment.
