What are some of the challenges facing members of the Negro race?

I think racism will always be a major issue that black people will have a challenge with. Apart from gun violence and human trafficking, black people will be looked down on by some people of other races because they ‘think’ they live in more developed societies. Also, our own race needs to learn to appreciate [others] and themselves.

Kaleela Walsh, 20

I think, especially overseas, the black race struggles with police brutality. This is usually seen among the males. However, many police officers mistreat these youths because they are black and are perceived to be nothing but trouble. It’s very unsettling.

André Henry, 18

I think black people make situations bad for themselves. If you view society today, many of them portray a lazy and selfish mentality. That, I believe, causes many of our challenges and discomfort within our race ... causes other races of people to think they are more superior than us.

Serita Henningham, 19

I think black people’s mentality is where the challenge lies. Many of our black artistes are writing songs to encourage the tearing down of each other, including encouragement for males to cheat and push violence. From these lyrics, we develop a bad mentality that poses a great challenge to how our future will turn out. It needs to stop.
