Miller fired up ahead of Super50 final
CAPTAIN NIKITA Miller believes Jamaica Scorpions always had it in them to post big totals and it was just a matter of time.
He made the disclosure following the team’s mega 292 runs win over ousted champions Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the semi-final action of the WICB Regional Super50 Tournament on Wednesday.
“Before the final, we spoke about some of the previous games we batted in , whereby we set up innings nicely, but we just did not close it out,’’ expressed Miller.
“We then said this is the game for us to close it out. Given the type of players that we have we are capable of scoring big runs. It subsequently happened and we are thankful.’’
Jamaica, who are reaching their first final since the 2011-2012 when they won the title, amassed a record-breaking 434 for four off their 50 overs. The Robert Samuels-coached unit then returned to bowl out Trinidad for 142.
RECORDS
The innings of the Scorpions brought about several records. This includes registering the highest margin of victory since the tournament was inaugurated in 1972 and Jamaica’s biggest one-day total ever.
Additionally, there was also the record of the most sixes hit by a team, 27.
Openers Chadwick Walton and Steven Taylor, who put on a record 174 runs, laid the foundation for the Scorpions, with Jermaine Blackwood following through with 108, and Man of The Match, Rovman Powell, a late-order 95. The latter also returned to take five for 36.
Miller, in the meanwhile, is hoping that his charges will be able to put in a similar display against Barbados Pride in the final today, also at Coolidge.
“It’s a final and you don’t really have a choice. You just have to bring your ‘A’ game,’’ expressed Miller.
“I want to thank the team for the character they have shown so far. We didn’t play well in our first game and lost, but we did not hang our heads. We held it up, and we have since played some good cricket and have excited the crowd, and, hopefully, come the final, we will continue in that vein.’’
