Salute to 173
Dominican Republic Independence Day
THE DOMINICAN Republic celebrated 173 years of independence in fine style at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on Monday.
Guests were out, meeting and greeting in fashionable numbers during the cocktail hour of the evening. They also used the time to see another side of the Dominican Republic’s ambassador to Jamaica, Dr Jose Tomas Ares German, who had some of his original artwork on display.
Once everyone was in high spirits, the man of the hour took to the stage to commence the formal proceedings.
After outlining the history and achievements of his country, the ambassador spoke of strengthening an already great bond between the two countries, through investment opportunities. He thanked Jamaica for the hospitality, and sponsors for coming on board for the special occasion. And last but not least, he thanked his wife, Sheila, for her support over the years. Wrapping up his speech with a toast to friendship, he made way for Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson-Smith.
BLESSED WITH PROGRESS
She offered congratulations to the ambassador. The country’s motto, ‘God, country and liberty’, along with the colours of the flag, according to the minister, symbolise blessings. And she commended the nation on its great achievements in recent times, specifically its economic progress.
She encouraged stronger bilateral engagements and concluded with salute over wine. The playing of both national anthems, which came at the very end of the event was followed by a round of applause from specially invited guests.
