Nutramix workshops to benefit farmers islandwide
FARMERS ACROSS Jamaica are benefiting from a series of workshops conducted by Nutramix, which are designed to improve output.
The workshops are geared towards livestock farmers, both large and small, as well as non-contract farmers.
“The overall objective of the workshop is to educate the small farmers of Jamaica with the best and most modern practices to grow their animals. It is to share information with them so that they can be successful in their investments,” said Winston Thomas, technical sales manager for Newport Mills, manufacturers of the Nutramix brand of animal feed.
“These workshops have been going on from the inception of the company. Each year, we undertake to do anywhere between 40 and 50 of them across all parishes. Through our Nutramix brand, we do all the preparatory work and execution of these workshops,” added Thomas.

He said the workshops have been well received. “The responses over the years have been overwhelming. This is the reason we continue to do them. It has been tested and proven that these workshops usually result in a change in behavior of the small farmers in a positive way,” said Thomas.
Carlyle Wilson, a resident of Summit in Morant Bay, St Thomas, said the workshops have been beneficial to him. A farmer for more than 30 years, Wilson supplies chicken, pork and cattle to cookshops in and around St Thomas.
“The workshops have been very enlightening. I learnt a lot of new things as it relates to raising chickens. It’s very educational,” said Wilson, who attended the workshop held in Morant Bay last month.
The remaining workshops are scheduled for Port Antonio, Portland; May Pen, Clarendon; Bog Walk, St Catherine; Montego Bay, St James; Darliston Westmoreland; and St Ann.
