Anderson steals day two of Carifta trials

VERE TECHNICAL’S 16-year old hurdler Britany Anderson was the star performer on yesterday’s second and final day of the Carifta Trials held inside the National Stadium. She raced to a World Youth leading time of 13.21 seconds, in a negative wind of 3.2m per second, to win the Girl’s Under-18 100m hurdles event.
Anderson who has been creating quite a storm this season in the event and who posted a fast 13.18 seconds, also in negative wind at the Youngster Goldsmith Development Meet, defeated a quality field. A first year Class 2 athlete at the ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Championships, Anderson got a perfect start to win, going away from Manchester High’s Daszay Freeman. Freeman, the defending Class 2 champion in the event, was second in 13.44 seconds, with Holmwood Technical’s Shanette Allison, the bronze medallist in the event at Champs a year ago, finishing third in 13.54 seconds.
It was a sweep of the hurdles events for Vere Technical athletes, as Amoi Brown was also impressive in winning the Under-20 event. Running in a negative wind of 1.0 metres per second, Brown controlled the race early to win impressively in 13.33 seconds. Getting back to good form, it was second for Wolmer’s Girl’s athlete Janeek Brown in 13.52 seconds, with Edwin Allen High’s Gabrielle McDonald taking third in 13.57 seconds.
It was also a clean sweep by Calabar High in the sprint hurdles, with World Under-20 representative Dejour Russell leading the way. A fourth place finisher in Poland last year, Russell got one of his best-ever starts to win the Boy’s Under-18 110m hurdles in 13.31 seconds, running in a negative wind of 0.8m per second. Kingston College’s, Wayne Pinnock finished second in 13.71 seconds with Oquendo Bernard finishing third in 13.80 seconds.
OUTSTANDING RESULTS
Russell’s teammate Orlando Bennett (13.86) got the better of his former teammate Alex Robinson of Wolmer’s Boy’s, second in 13.90 seconds to win the Under-20 event, as Philip Lemonious of Jamaica College got third in 14.02 seconds.
There were also outstanding results in the 400 metres led by IAAF World Under-20 representative, Christopher Taylor of Calabar, who had a sub 46 seconds clocking. Running out of lane four, Taylor, competing in the event for the first time this season, was out of the blocks very fast and controlled the race throughout to win in 45.41 seconds.
Kingston College’s Dashawn Morris ran well for second in 46.67 seconds with third going to Malik Smith of Bridgeport High in 47.39 seconds. Antonio Watson captured the Boy’s Under 18 event in 47.08 seconds ahead of Ramone Lindo of Vere in 47.18 seconds, with third going to Jevaughn Powell of Edwin Allen in 47.26 seconds.
