1953:The

National Workers’ Union (NWU) polls a majority vote in a Labour Department-conducted union jurisdicti­on ballot among workers of R. Ehrenstein and Co Ltd, Morant Bay, St Thomas. The Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU), the other union named on the ballot paper, did not contest the poll. It had informed the Labour Department previously that it has no interest in the representa­tion of these workers. Ballot results are: NWU 29, BITU 1, a total of 30 votes out of the 38 workers entitled to vote. The poll is conducted for the Labour Department by V.G. Saunders. 1982:leaders Government sports

from eight Caribbean members of the Intergover­nmental Sports Organisati­on of Latin American and the Caribbean (ODILAC) and observers from two countries meet in the island on March 18 and 19, 1982 in a regional congress preparator­y to next month’s 4th general meeting of the organisati­on in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Jamaica is a founding member of ODILAC, which came into existence in 1979. Youth and Community Developmen­t Minister Errol Anderson will deliver the main address to delegates, observers and specially invited guests at the formal opening of the congress in the Marcus Garvey Room of the New Kingston Hotel, after Institute of Sports Chairman C. Lloyd Allen’s opening remarks. Messrs Anderson and Allen are Jamaica’s ODILAC delegates. 1982:Corporate Twenty-eight

Area allage schools will match spikes for the Institute of Sports Trophy in their annual Track and Field Championsh­ips which begins at the National Stadium. A trophy will also be awarded to the school winning most points in the boys and girls sections. Windward Road AllAge School are the defending champions and they will be up against New Day, Swallowfie­ld, John Mills, Shortwod Practising, Mico Practising, Elletson, Constant Spring, Dallas, Greenwich Town, Cavaliers, Stony Hill, Calabar, Red Hills, St Francis, Norman Gardens, Rock Hall, Balcombe Drive, Seaward, Halls Delight, Melrose, Hugh Sherlock, Maverley, Boys’ Town, Gregory Park, St Michael’s, and St Theresa.
