SEX IS GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN AND HAIR

HERE ARE FIVE WAYS

ACCORDING TO scientific research, sexual interaction and the release of the ‘feelgood’ hormones – such as oxcy-tocin and endorphins – during the act can do wonders for your health, in more ways than one. In fact, having a vibrant, active, healthy sex life is probably one of the best things you can do for great health. Did you also know that maintaining a healthy sex life is also good for your skin and hair, keeping you youthful, glowing and quite healthy? Well, here is how.

YOUNGER-LOOKING SKIN

Stress is pretty much the worst thing for your complexion. In fact, stress hormones like cortisol are linked to wrinkles, stated Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD, a clinical psychologist. Regular sex sessions can reduce the harmful effects stress has on your skin, especially if you have an orgasm or two. There is some evidence that the oestrogen released during an orgasm actually boosts collagen levels, noted Dr Joel Schlessinger, MD, a United States-based board-certified dermatologist, which can improve the appearance of lines. “The physical activity also triggers the human growth hormone, which makes skin look more elastic.”

IMPROVE GLOW

Like any vigorous physical activity, sex helps improve blood circulation, increasing the flow of oxygen to the skin and other organs. “This boost in circulation is what brightens the complexion and gives your skin that glow,” noted Schlessinger. “It also increases your heart rate, which gets the blood flowing.”

STRONGER HAIR, NAILS

“Research has shown that sex improves the body’s ability to absorb and metabolise nutrients effectively,” Schlessinger pointed out. “An increase in those essential vitamins and minerals means healthier hair and stronger nails in the long run.”

FULLER LIPS

The amped-up blood flow from sexual intercourse can also help you have fuller, plumper lips. “Sex increases your heart rate, which gets blood flowing,” Schlessinger said. “This increase in blood flow can lead to fuller-looking lips.”

BETTER SLEEP

The biggest benefit of all from a healthy sex life is improved sleep, which leads to a refreshed and more alert look in the morning – thanks to the ‘feel-good’ hormone, oxytocin. “Often referred to as the cuddle hormone, oxytocin floods the brain when we have sex,” said Nicholas Sieveking, MD, a US-based boardcertified plastic surgeon. “This is what gives us that sleepy, relaxed feeling after an orgasm.” Getting a good night’s sleep consistently will automatically translate to overall healthy-looking skin. We all know how haggard we get when we are sleep deprived.

So, you can reduce your hair and beauty products budget a great deal if you amp up your sex life. And make sure to throw in as many Big Os as possible for even greater benefits.
