Put aside your egos, Hanna and Grange

-

THE EDITOR, Sir: This is an open letter to Culture Minister Olivia Grange and Opposition Spokesperson Lisa Hanna.

AS A concerned citizen of Jamaica who looks forward to our Festival celebrations (though I have never been afforded tickets to attend the Grand Gala), I implore you to stop using Jamaica’s Independence celebrations as a political footstool.

Ladies, I beg you to stop tearing down each other. Stop highlighting each other’s mistakes. Perhaps the thought of working together, joining hands, ideas, hearts and minds to plan and execute our Independence celebrations, irrespective of the government of the day, has never crossed your minds.

Both of you have done yourselves proud in your individual capacities. Can you imagine if you should work together? Can you imagine the positive impact this would have on the very groups of our citizens this ministry represents? Think about it: If you ladies tear into each other with every passing opportunity, what do we expect society to do?

I implore you to stop this nonsense. Yes, we heard all the wrongs Ms Hanna did at Jamaica 50, and now we are hearing the same for Ms Grange’s Jamaica 55. Let us move forward with renewed minds and hearts, especially as powerful ladies in society, and work together for the greater good of this beautiful island, Jamaica.

We do not want our celebrations to be marred by political rivalry, egos or emotion. D.R.B. deerichbee@gmail.com St Andrew
