Peddie maintains Maverley survival hope
MAVE R LE YHUGH END EN’ S goalscorer Phillip Peddie described his team’s win against Reno as a “big boost” in their quest to remain in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL).
Peddie replaced Rodico Wellington in the 60th minute and fired home a free-kick 19 minutes later to hand MaverleyHugh end en a crucial1-0victory.
The win pushed MaverleyHugh end en from last place to 11th on 31 points in the 12-team RSPL. They are only a point behind Boys’ Town, who are in 10th position on 32 points. Jamalco are at the bottom on 29 points.
“We know that going forward, this is a good morale boost for the team, with two games remaining in the league,” Peddie, who was named manof-the-match, told The Gleaner.
GOOD FEELING
“My team did the work today and came away with the three points. It is a good feeling to come on and score the winning goal. We will continue to play each game as a final,” he added.
Reno had the better opportunities but was let down by faulty shooting. MaverleyHugh end en’ s goalkeeper, George Brown, also made two wonderful saves.
Byjeon Thomas, who took over as coach of Maverley Hugh end en following the sacking of Anthony Patrick last month, is fully aware that his team needs to win the remaining games to stay up.
“We have two finals to play. The team played with a lot of fight today, and it paid off. I think the players believe in themselves more,” Thomas said.
Meanwhile, Reno’s technical director, Wendell Downswell, says that his team will just honour the remaining fixtures as their chance of finishing in the top six ahead of Arnett Gardens is a difficult task.
“It is difficult for us to qualify for the top six as Arnett are six points ahead of us and would have to lose their two games, and we would have to win our games. We missed too many chances, and Maverley wanted the game more than us,” he reasoned.
