“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making the wise simple.” – Psalms 19:7

JUST OVER two years ago, Nigel Powell was planning to execute a mission that, undoubtedly, would undoubtedly have destroyed his life.

He had taken on a way to make quick money to fulfil his desires as according to him, he was tired of waiting.

Powell began to gather teenage girls to sell weed and to ‘work on the block’ (prostitution).

“I thought that if they could make five grand every weekend, then I could have control over them and they could get their friends to be a part of it too.

“So I got the girls and started making some links to get weed. However, on Friday, May 15, 2015, one of them called me and told me someone took her money. I said, ‘OK, no problem. I will deal with him,’ Powell said.

He shared that he began sourcing guns and ammunition and gathered information on the person who had allegedly taken the girl’s money. He had made up his mind to commit murder.

“I got the time him take taxi at the park and mark mi spot, how me ago deal with it, and change clothes and cut. But while all of that was going on, Operation Youth Reap (an evangelical organisation) was at a church in my community. My little sister told me about it, but I never want to hear because a different plans me did have.

“My mother called me the Sunday morning and said I should go to church, even to get a little prayer. While getting ready, I heard a voice say, ‘Bring extra underpants because baptism is today’,” he said, adding that he obliged though he didn’t know where the voice had come from.

Powell told Family & Religion that when the service ended and an altar call was made, he got up to leave but somehow found himself at the altar.

According to him: “While there, is like everything started playing out in my head, and I started questioning myself: What if I get caught with a gun? What if man start pree fi kill me too? What if me get lock up?

“It was so real, and I felt emotions like I wanted to cry, but I held it in until I said, ‘God, just make a way for me. Provide for me and I will serve you’, and from that moment, I started crying. When I was about to go in the pool, I started remembering my bad ways, but when I testified and went down in the pool, I went with hatred and bitterness. The moment I came out, I stepped into a new beginning. I felt love that I had never experienced in my life.

“I fell in love with Jesus that day, and my life has not been the same since May 17, 2015,” Powell testified.

Powell revealed that the following day, he heard that the person who was to give him the gun and the other one who was to supply the bullets had both both murdered in separate shootings.

“But I am here today. Not only did God preserve me, He has been providing for me. I am now working, in a relationship, loving God more than words can even express. I am now very involved in ministry and at my church. God has taken me from destruction to dominance and has proved there is more in me than I thought. I thank Him for saving me,” he said.
