MoBay City Run bigger & better

ALMOST 4,000 runners and walkers descended on the streets of Montego Bay, St James, last Sunday for the fourth staging of the increasingly popular MoBay City Run.

The charity event, which provides scholarships for needy tertiary students across western Jamaica, for the first time had a 3K section for children 12 years old and under. The run officially kicked off at approximately 6:10 a.m. from the Old Hospital Park on Gloucester Avenue (Hip Strip), to loud cheers from the thousands of participants.

50 PER CENT INCREASE

The number of participants increased this year by a record 50 per cent, increasing the prospects of the annual event helping far more students than previous years.

MoBay City Run has donated $10.5 million over the past three years, and if Sunday’s crowd was any indication, the funds being made available will be increased considerably, particularly for early-childhood education. “Yes, we have committed half of a million dollars towards early-childhood education and we will deliver on that promise,” stated logistics coordinator Emerson Whittley. Mayor of Montego Bay Homer Davis, who officially started the race, commended the organisers, stating that MoBay City Run was a welcome respite from some of the problems which have been plaguing the tourism capital. “Almost every sector in the Montego Bay business community was represented here today, which is by no means an easy feat to pull off,” Davis remarked.
