Brief history of the school

THIS INSTITUTIO­N was opened in January 1967 as a junior secondary school. It commenced as a co-ed institutio­n with an enrolment of over 830 distribute­d across three grade levels, 7-9.

Since its inception, the school has seen several transition­s.

In 1974, the school evolved from Spanish Town Junior Secondary to Spanish Town Secondary School. It was in that year that the shift system was introduced to cater to the increased population due to overcrowdi­ng.

In 1978, the Ministry of Education erected the threestore­y building, geared mainly at the vocational areas.

In 1995, we became a comprehens­ive high school.

In 2000, the school was upgraded to a high school.

The school currently has a population of 2,265 students, 130 teachers, and 35 members of support staff.

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Spanish Town High School is to create and maintain a safe and motivating teaching – learning environmen­t in which the staff and students will be afforded the opportunit­y of achieving their highest levels of potential, developing personal pride, self-worth, a sense of responsibi­lity, and commitment to self, family, and country and the global community at large.

VISION STATEMENT

Spanish Town High is dedicated to providing education of the highest quality that will foster worthwhile values in our students to meet the changing needs of the society and to fulfill the Education Transforma­tional goals.

PHILOSOPHY

Spanish Town High School believes in the total developmen­t of each student – in his/her academic, spiritual, physical, and social developmen­t.

SCHOOL’S MOTTO

The school’s motto is ‘Aim for Excellence’.

Our daily mantra is ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthen­s me’.
