Health minister opens registration for Grace Kennedy Education 5K
Minister of Health Dr Christopher Tufton registered for the 9th annual Grace Kennedy Education 5K Run/Walk at the Loshushan Barbican Plaza on Thursday.
In endorsing what he describes as one of the many worthy causes that Grace Kennedy undertakes, he pointed out that the benefits of the July 9 fundraising event were threefold.
“For one, it encourages more citizens to engage in physical activity to prevent non-communicable and lifestyle diseases. Second, it is a most worthy cause which empowers our youths through education. Third, it increases activity in the heart of the city. I wholeheartedly support and endorse this run and encourage all Jamaicans to come out in your numbers on July 9 in downtown Kingston,” Minister Tufton said.
All proceeds from the largest fundraiser undertaken by the company to support its charitable arm, the Grace and Staff Community Development Foundation, goes towards the ever-increasing demand for education interventions and community development programmes.
With a $10-million target, the popular event caters to runners, walkers, cyclists and wheelchair participants. The race director is Alfred ‘Frano’ Francis.
The exciting event will also see teams of cyclists participating in the 28K race riding to the Norman Manley International Airport roundabout and back. Other attractions include a boat race on the Kingston Harbour and vendors setting up a Coronation-style market for patrons to purchase produce after the event.
