1970:The

world president of the Jaycees movement, Hiroshi Maeda of Japan, arrives at Palisadoes airport by Pan Am jet from San Juan for a three-day visit. He is on an official visit to the West Indies Jaycees (an affiliate of the world body) which will be celebratin­g its 10th anniversar­y on May 21, 1970. He is welcomed on arrival by Roy Banarsee, president of the WI Jaycees; Ryan Peralto, president of the Jaycees of Jamaica; George DeMercado, vice-president for operations, WI Jaycees; Eddie Shoucair, president of the Kingston Jaycees, and other members of the movement. In an interview shortly after arrival, Maeda says the world movement was growing and the spirit is quite strong. It is being built from the local and regional level to the internatio­nal level. Under his presidency, emphasis is being placed “to develop developing countries” and to see that the structure of the movement is run efficientl­y and constructi­vely. 1986:A

six-cent acrossthe-board increase in the price of all grades of bananas which qualify for export is approved by the Banana Export Company and is announced by the chairman of the All-Island Banana Growers’ Associatio­n, Bobby Pottinger. The price increase became effective on Monday, May 19, 1986 after it is agreed upon at a special meeting of the executive committee of the AIBGA. Under the improved pricing, bananas with a quality rating of 85 per cent and over will attract a price of 92 cents per lb, up from 86 cents; fruit with an 80-84% quality rating will fetch 86 cents per lb, as against 80 cents previously; bananas with a quality rating of 75-79% will be bought at 80 cents per lb, up from 4 cents; fruit with a quality rating of 70-74% will fetch 74 cents per lb, up from 68 cents, while fruit with a quality rating of 69% and less will be bought at 62 cents per lb, up from 58 cents.
