Pro-Am boxing card set for Barbican Beach
“THERE WILL be plenty of action at the Barbican Beach Complex, East King’s House Road, on Saturday, May 27.” That was a promise made last Friday at Usain Bolt’s Track & Records by John Isaacs of Creative Sports, as he announced an attractive six-fight card, featuring amateur boxers from Panama going up against their Jamaican counterparts, as well as two professional bouts featuring local boxers. The fight card will be under the auspices of the Jamaica Boxing Board.
The Canada-based United Boxing Promotions will jointly sponsor the professional bouts, which will see three promising boxers and a veteran exchanging punches. In the feature bout, Kestna Davis, one of Jamaica’s outstanding amateur boxers over the past several years, will have his second pro bout against veteran Anthony Osbourne. In his first, a few weeks ago, he scored a unanimous decision over Fabian Tucker. On this occasion, Tucker will go up against Nico Yeyo, who has also recently turned pro. Both bouts are scheduled for five rounds. In the amateur bouts, Jamaican lightweight Ricardo Carter will take on Jhonathan Miniel from Panama, another lightweight. Sanjay Williams boxes Panamanian Leonel Gutterrez. Middleweight Janathan Hanson will trade punches with Luis Hernandez, and super heavyweight Ricardo Brown will be challenged by Ronaldo Bermudez.
LONG HISTORY OF ALLIANCES
The Panamanian ambassador to Jamaica, Alexis Sandoval, gave his blessing to the promotion and said that Panama was happy to be engaging in competition with Jamaica’s amateurs. He pointed to the long history of boxing alliances between the two countries. Panama, he said, had crowned 30 world boxing champions, and it was his wish to see Jamaica also attain such a milestone. Boxing board president Stephen Jones lauded the promoters for putting on the show and sponsors J. Wray and Nephew for the assistance that they are providing to boxing in Jamaica. J. Wray and Nephew’s Marketing Manager Pietro Gramegna presented Jones with a cheque for $2 million as part of its 2017 contribution to boxing.
