Marley athletics traced to Bob

Redskins signee from family committed to exercise

- Mel Cooke Gleaner Writer

AFTER ESPN reported last week that Nico Marley was signed by the Washington Redskins football team as an undrafted free agent, general manager of the Bob Marley Foundation, Marie Bruce, is reminding the public about the family’s history of exercise.

And although Nico’s father, Rohan, played college football as a linebacker for the University of Miami and then in the Canadian professional league with the Ottawa Rough Riders, Bruce is tracing the thread of athletics back to Nico’s grandfather, Bob. BULL BAY RUNS

“I heard that when they (Bob Marley’s children) were children, he would take them to Bull Bay to race on the beach and nobody would beat him,” Bruce said. Still, specifically with Nico, she said, “I would speculate to say that he was influenced by his father (Rohan)”, adding that Nico’s body type is just like his father’s. The five feet eight inches tall Nico has been signed as an inside linebacker, ESPN saying that he is about 30 - 40 pounds lighter than the typical player in that position.

She said that the family is heavily into sports, both playing and watching games, basketball and football (soccer) at home, tour bus, hotel or on the road — anywhere they happen to be at a particular time. “I think it is in their DNA,” she said.

She put the signing within the context of the Marley family going into different areas. “The third generation is so diverse” Bruce said.
