DOES YOUR living room look a bit old and tired? Home decorating can often seem like a major expense, but it really doesn’t have to be. Before you consider large projects, adding cushions to your sofa is an easy and affordable way to update your space while adding visual interest.

Often, choosing the right cushions can be a daunting task as there are so many to choose from. Some important things to consider when choosing the right cushions are colour, pattern and placement.

COLOUR

Colour is the most important step in this process, as having a cohesive colour palette will create harmony in your space. Look at the colour on walls, artwork, accessories and curtains for suggestions in choosing the colour of your cushions.

PATTERN

When considering pattern and mixing prints, choose prints which have the same scale in size, so it’s easier on the eyes. Choose cushions with added texture to add dimension – for example, choose pillows with various textural fabrics, or pillows with added embellishments such as tassels, pom-poms and beading.

PLACEMENT

Using the no-fail, 2-2-1 formula will help to eliminate confusion when arranging your cushions on your sofa – a simple concept which accomplishes spectacular effects if done right. You begin by placing two cushions to the back of the sofa then add two more cushions in another print or colour in front, and finish with one eye-catching pillow in the middle. Scale is very important — if your cushions are too large, they can dwarf the sofa and make it difficult for your guests to sit.
