THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on May 30 in the years identified:
1960:West Jamaica keeps the
Indies Women’s Hockey Championships alive when they edge British Guiana 2-1 at Bonne Adventure Park, Pointe-A-Piere. By this victory, their first since the championships started in 1956, Jamaica now ties with British Guiana with three points in as many matches. potato growers reject the $1.10 per lb offered by the Christiana Potato Growers Co-operative, and call for $2 per lb. This surfaces when over 1,000 angry potato growers from St Ann, Trelawny, Clarendon and Manchester meet in Christiana. The meeting heard from NorthWest Manchester Member of Parliament Stafford Haughton and the deputy mayor of May Pen, Minnie Clarke. The meeting mandates Jamaica Labour Party caretaker for NorthEast Manchester, Audley Shaw, to head a delegation that will meet with the Agricultural Credit Bank managing director, Ed McKie, and Agriculture Minister Percival Broderick on Tuesday, May 31, to determine a better price. Speaking at the meeting, Shaw says that the hardships being faced by the growers are the result of the failure of the Christiana Potato Cooperative to honour certain market contract.
