the Jamaican Government, a study group from the world-renowned CARE organisati­on is in Jamaica to hold talks with various government department­s on the possibilit­y of introducin­g the CARE programme into this island. The group, comprised of Felix Ashenhurst, CARE programme director in Panama; Ralph Devone, assistant director in Colombia; and Louis Pellegrini assistant director in Mexico, arrived in Jamaica on Monday, June 21 and will hold a full round of table talks with government officials. Among the persons seen are Edwin Allen, who is acting as prime minister; Edward Seaga, minister of Developmen­t and welfare; A.P. Clerk, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Developmen­t and Welfare; and T.H. Holder, acting director of the Central Planning Unit. 1990:are Several journalist­s

honoured by the Caribbean Publishing & Broadcasti­ng Associatio­n and the Caribbean Broadcasti­ng Union (CPBA/CBU) at the annual media awards luncheon, for upholding high standards of journalism in the region. The awards ceremony, which takes place at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, forms part of the CBU’s 20th anniversar­y celebratio­ns being hosted in Jamaica. The Gleaner publicatio­ns sweep the awards by taking five of the 11 awards. Franklin McKnight of The Gleaner Company wins the award for ‘Outstandin­g Investigat­ive Journalist’ (all media for the region). For ‘Service to the Community’, the Dominican Broadcasti­ng Corporatio­n and Delroy A. Whyte-Hall of The Gleaner share the award, and CANA Radio wins the award for promoting regional integratio­n. Carl Wint of The Gleaner wins the ‘Outstandin­g Journalist’ prize; Whyte-Hall for ‘Outstandin­g Photograph­er’; H.G. Helps of The Gleaner for ‘Outstandin­g Sports Writer’; Therese Mills of the Trinidad Publishing Company for ‘Outstandin­g Feature Writer’ (she is absent); and William Bradshaw of the Nation newspaper in Barbados for ‘Outstandin­g News Writer’ in the Print category.
