Bounce to rebound in race 3
NECROMANCER, WHO was forced to play second fiddle to stablemate Nadeshico on May 27, should not be opposed in tomorrow’s opening race of the Sunrise-6.
With the guaranteed minimum increased to $1.5 million for the Boom Jamaica Derby Day, punters will want to get off to a winning start, and the Casual Trick – Eighteen Karat filly looks the right choice for the 600 metres event.
Trained by Anthony Nunes, NECROMANCER clocked 36.2 when second to her stablemate in May and should get the better of newcomer APOLLO BAY with overseas-based Dane Nelson in the saddle.
Nelson will close a quick double for trainer Nunes in race two, a 1200 metres race for horses in the $250,000 to $210,000 claiming group. Nunes saddles ARIZONA GOLD, who was not disgraced in placing seventh by six lengths to Cruising Motion over 1000 metres on May 6 in the $450,000 claiming group. The five-year-old gelding is down two levels and should get the better of the improving BIG MISTAKE.
BOUNCE is a firm fancy in race three. The four-year-old gelding won well over the 1500 metres distance on April 22, and then gave two encouraging efforts in the non-winners of three. He did finish behind CUP O TEA on June 3, but that result can be thrown out the window. BOUNCE allowed CUP O TEA 10lb on April 22 and won fairly easily. Now the latter is up to 121lb, while BOUNCE, going his favourite distance, is down to 119lb, a swing of 13lb.
ANOTHER EASY WIN
Nelson should have another easy win aboard CHIEF PROSPECT in race four. Last time he ran at this level ($180,000 claiming), CHIEF PROSPECT won by 16 lengths.
At first glance, race five looks competitive but a closer examination will reveal that FRANKENSTORM is a cinch in the 1100 metres event. He was up with $525,000 claiming last Saturday and is just too good for the $350,000 claiming group. It should be an all-the-way win with the 3kg claiming apprentice Anthony Thomas aboard.
Fifteen maidens will face the starter in race six, where first-timer TEN CARATS looks the one to beat. By Fearless Vision – Diamondntheruff, the Christopher Pierre-trained filly has been burning up the exercise track since mid-May.
I will, however, take my chances with Fitzroy Glispie’s SON OF SPARTACUS. He ran an even race when fifth by ten lengths to Five Star over 1100 metres on April 1. He was then burdened with 56kg and, now down to 50kg, will make a bold bid with apprentice Oneil Beckford aboard. SON OF SPARTACUS worked alongside overnight allowance campaigner Another Fury on June 17, completing 800 metres flat in 51.0 seconds and could use his race experience to upstage TEN CARATS.
