THIS DAY IN OUR PAST

The following events took place on June 29 in the years identified:

-

Expansion pro 1970: gramme to be pursued by the Jamaica Public Service Company Ltd between 1970 and 1974 is estimated to cost approximately $57,000,000. This is stated by Russell Carney, managing director and president of the company, as he addresses members of the Downtown Kiwanis and their guests at their weekly luncheon at Melrose Hotel. He further states that the construction budget for the year alone is in excess of $14,000,000. Carney gives a general review of the history of the company from 1823, ending with present projects being undertaken by them in their search to satisfy the consumer. 1987:Florizel Governor General

Glasspole is expected to have his first pay rise in approximately eight years on June 30, when Parliament votes on a motion to increase his salary from the current $30,000 per annum to $88,000 per annum. The motion is to be piloted by Minister of the Public Service Clifton Stone, who points out to The Gleaner that all other sectors of Government have received at least two pay increases, since the governor general’s post was given its last increase. The governor general’s new salary will be above that of the chief justice, who earns approximately $63,000 annually. However, Glasspole will have to meet all his personal household staff expenses out of the salary, which will greatly reduce the gross sum. A sum of $205,000 is provided for in the 1987-88 Budget to cover Glasspole’s administrative, executive and clerical assistance in respect of work arising from his official duties.
