THIS DAY IN OUR PAST

-

The following events took place on August 3 in the years identified: 1983:national Air Jamaica, the

airline, is to discontinue its twice-weekly service to the southeastern Caribbean from Thursday, September 1. Peamel Charles, minister of public utilities and transport, says that the move is being made in the context of the review of routes and the programme of rationalisation of Air Jamaica. “The state of the airline requires that some assessment be made as to whether or not the airline could continue to operate on routes which are not sufficiently profitable,” he says. Ground and air crew employed in servicing this route will be absorbed in other areas of the company’s operation, Charles says. Air Jamaica began flying to Trinidad and Tobago by way of Barbados in June 1982, but from the inaugural flight there were doubts about the viability of the route. The failure of Air Jamaica to secure Fifth Freedom rights from Barbados, which would allow it to take up, in Barbados, passengers bound for Trinidad, is said to have greatly affected the viability of the route. 2000:December Young Theda, born

29, 1922, was the first of seven children for Randolph and Etta Hylton who were farmers, living in Retirement, St Ann. She attended the Retirement Elementary School where she sat the Pupil Teacher Examinations. Two years later, after passing the First Year Teachers’ College Examinations, she was appointed assistant teacher of the Sawyers All-Age School. She continued her studies and passed the second and third year examinations, and in 1963 completed her training at the Moneague Teachers’ College. Her sterling contribution to education in Jamaica spanned more than 56 years and thousands of students benefited from her commitment. A consummate educator, Scott has tutored slow and remedial readers, transforming them into capable readers. The Jamaica Teachers’ Association and the Trelawny Chamber of Commerce and Industry have recognised her for outstanding service in the field of education.
