-

Attorney-at-law and general manager of MGI Brokers, Kimm Daley, whose company’s portfolio includes motor, employers’ liability and public liability, provided us with some useful tips: BEFORE AN ACCIDENT Drive safely. Drive defensively. Do not use cellular phones while driving. Pull off the road instead. Always observe the speed limit. AFTER AN ACCIDENT: BE CALM Safeguard all items that could be looted/stolen. Mark vehicle’s position before moving it to a safe location, if possible. Call for roadside assistance (have telephone number and company name handy). Call wrecker service (if needed). Report all accidents to the police and your insurer immediately, whether or not a claim will be made or you are at fault.

Never admit liability and do not make any payment offer or payment to the other party(ies). SUMBITTING A CLAIM After an accident/collision, you should submit the following documents within 30 days of it occurring:

Fully completed motor accident report form signed by the driver (also known as the insured) and affixed with a company stamp (if the vehicle is companyowned).

Driver’s statement of accident legibly written and easily understood containing information on the third party (owner, driver’s name, insurance company, year/make/model of vehicle, any bodily injury, property damage (if any) and witness(es). Have someone review to ensure clarity.

If the driver is a learner, a copy of the provisional driver’s licence and driver’s licence of the person present and under whose tutelage the learner would have been. Copy of certificate of fitness. Copy of registration certificate. Proof of insurance (insurance certificate of cover note).
