Ja Cycling Federation AGM postponed
THE JAMAICA Cycling Federation’s Annual General Meeting and presidential elections, which were set for this weekend, have been pushed back to September 3. However, no other candidate has come forward to challenge interim president Dennis Chung, who is the only named candidate to date. Chung said that the election was postponed because the federation wanted to lend its support to the Clarendon Cycling Club, which hosted its criterium event in Lionel Town yesterday. “The elections have been put off. We wanted to attend the Lionel Town Criterium, which is sponsored by the mayor and put on by the Clarendon Club,” he noted. Although no other challenger has declared an intention to run the presidential race, Chung says that there is still a lot of time for anyone who is still considering it. “I haven’t heard of any interest. Nobody else has come forward, but they still have time as people can also be nominated straight from the floor,” he added.
Chung, who came in about two months ago when previous president Kirk Finnikin stepped down in May because of personal reasons, says that he has had mostly favourable responses to his leadership since he took the post and he is quietly planning ahead.
“The feedback is mixed, but it has been generally good, and we are hoping to build on it. We are doing what we need to do, so we will see on September 3,” he said.
“We are trying to put structures in place as there are really a lot of deficiencies that we need to address. But we are also planning for future events coming up such as the national track championships and the Pan Am track championship in September. We are also looking towards getting Marloe Rodman to the Olympics, so we will assist him to get his qualification done,” he added.
