THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on August 14 in the years identified:
1984:The
House of Representatives pays tribute to Jamaica’s team to the Los Angeles Olympics for winning three medals, as well as the West Indies cricket team for their 5-0 trouncing of England in the series which concludes today. Anthony Johnson, minister of state in the Ministry of Agriculture, speaking on a motion for the adjournment of the House, says that Jamaica’s placing 28th in the Olympics out of 140-odd competing countries and where less than 30 countries got a medal, is a performance to be proud of. “We are, sir, the smallest country to gain a medal at the Olympics,” Johnson says to loud cheers from the members. He says that Jamaica’s record of performance, despite its constraints and the small number of its contingent, shows the resilience of the people and what can be achieved through hard work and discipline, which is required if the country is to pick itself up from its current dilemma. 1989:Student An Office of
Services is to be established by the University of the West Indies beginning next term. This decision, made by the Finance and General Purposes Committee of Mona, follows agitation by students and representation by new student leadership, a release from the Guild of Undergraduates says. The Office of the Student Services will be head by a director or dean of students who has not yet been appointed. Services to be looked at will include students’ accommodation (on and off campus), catering services, financial aid, sports and recreation, social and cultural, and careers and placement. It is felt that the creation of this office will offer an opportunity to have various problems and issues dealt with more speedily.
