Ja Statistics Symposium begins October 24
THE THIRD biennial Jamaica Statistics Symposium and preconference workshops (JASSYM 2017), organised by The Jamaica Statistical Society is set for October 24-27, in Kingston, Jamaica, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day under the theme ‘Statistics for Success: Ethics, Data Security and Quality’.
An educational opportunity of a lifetime, the programme aims to further hone the data management and analysis skills of students, researchers, data analysts, policymakers, and professionals from all sectors of society involved in securing data, safeguarding data quality, interpreting and using statistics and statistical methodology.
Register for any of our workshops that will occur on October 24-27, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. There will be two half-day sessions in the pre-conference workshop series on October 24, training participants in the use of Microsoft Excel and R Statistical packages to carry out data management that optimises data quality and security. These will be led by experts from our local training institutions.
On October 25, Dr Rochelle Tractenberg, chair of the American Statistical Association (ASA) Committee on Professional Ethics and director of the collaborative for research on outcomes and metrics, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC, USA, will lead another of our preconference workshops that will equip participants to make the best use of the ASA ethical guidelines in their practice.
As part of the Symposium presentations, there will also be two short-course presentations featuring case studies and hands-on training using Jupyter Notebook and R. These will be given by Lorinette Wirth from the Saint Louis University, Missouri, USA.
The symposium will also have an interesting line-up of presentations from experts in different fields, featuring the application of statistical methodology in areas such as education, finance, economics, transportation and health.
