Ja Statistics Symposium begins October 24

THE THIRD biennial Jamaica Statistics Symposium and preconfere­nce workshops (JASSYM 2017), organised by The Jamaica Statistica­l Society is set for October 24-27, in Kingston, Jamaica, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day under the theme ‘Statistics for Success: Ethics, Data Security and Quality’.

An educationa­l opportunit­y of a lifetime, the programme aims to further hone the data management and analysis skills of students, researcher­s, data analysts, policymake­rs, and profession­als from all sectors of society involved in securing data, safeguardi­ng data quality, interpreti­ng and using statistics and statistica­l methodolog­y.

Register for any of our workshops that will occur on October 24-27, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. There will be two half-day sessions in the pre-conference workshop series on October 24, training participan­ts in the use of Microsoft Excel and R Statistica­l packages to carry out data management that optimises data quality and security. These will be led by experts from our local training institutio­ns.

On October 25, Dr Rochelle Tractenber­g, chair of the American Statistica­l Associatio­n (ASA) Committee on Profession­al Ethics and director of the collaborat­ive for research on outcomes and metrics, Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington, DC, USA, will lead another of our preconfere­nce workshops that will equip participan­ts to make the best use of the ASA ethical guidelines in their practice.

As part of the Symposium presentati­ons, there will also be two short-course presentati­ons featuring case studies and hands-on training using Jupyter Notebook and R. These will be given by Lorinette Wirth from the Saint Louis University, Missouri, USA.

The symposium will also have an interestin­g line-up of presentati­ons from experts in different fields, featuring the applicatio­n of statistica­l methodolog­y in areas such as education, finance, economics, transporta­tion and health.
