Campbell backs Henry, Anderson

VETERAN LOCAL coach Sylvester Campbell said interim Sunshine Girls coaches Sasher-Gaye Henry and Marvette Anderson should be given the job full time.

Henry and Anderson were appointed interim coaches of the Sunshine Girls team until the end of this year, following the resignation of Britainborn Jermaine Allison-McCracken on July 31. Henry was Allison-McCracken’s assistant at the time of her resignation.

The outspoken Campbell told The Gleaner that Netball Jamaica should give the job to both coaches on a long-term basis.

“As it is now, Marvette and Sasher-Gaye are there, so let us see how this works out,” said Campbell.

“Let us give local coaches the chance because that is the only reason we are equipping them. It’s for them to be able, at some point, to take over,” Campbell added.

“This is their moment. I believe that we have to stay with them and see what happens.

“Allison-McCracken came and she got her chance and it did not work out. Let us see how Sasher-Gaye and Marvette perform,” he added.

Allison-McCracken, who was appointed in April, resigned on July 31 after Netball Jamaica rejected the terms she had outlined in order to remain on the job. One of those terms included the removal of Henry from her position. Campbell also pointed out that Netball Jamaica should give Henry and Anderson all the necessary support that they need in order for them to be successful with the national team. “They have shown at another level that they are good enough, and so let us see what they do at the top now. We have to expose them. You have to push people, you have to encourage people, but the only thing is that they will need guidance from somebody that is technically good,” he said. “They are willing to work and to listen, and so this is their moment. They just have to be guided,” Campbell stated. Henry and Anderson are currently preparing the Sunshine Girls team for this year’s Fast 5 Netball World Series, which will be held in Australia in October.
