Alderton residents protest for better roads
SEVERAL RESIDENTS of Alderton in South East St Ann took to the streets yesterday, protesting for better road condition in their community.
The demonstration took place even as member of parliament for the area, Lisa Hanna, toured other sections of the constituency with personnel from the National Works Agency to look at road condition with a view to effecting repairs.
One source told The Gleaner that the protest was planned to coincide with the tour in an effort to ensure that the community is included in whatever road repairs are undertaken in the constituency.
The Claremont police said they received a call at around 10:30 yesterday morning informing of the demonstration, which was in effect right into the evening.
The police confirmed that the protest was for better road condition and that it was peaceful throughout.
Hanna spoke briefly with The Gleaner, confirming that there are plans afoot for road repairs in the constituency.
The protest by Alderton residents rekindled memories of the bitter feud between Hanna and Lydia Richards, councillor for the Bensonton division, where Alderton is located. It drew national attention in 2015, as Richards sought to replace Hanna as People’s National Party candidate for the general election.
Hanna subsequently prevailed in a run-off and went on to retain the seat for the party.
