to prevent bodies from piling up at morgues, awaiting post-mortem. Short- and medium-term strategies are developed by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Security to clear the bodies at government morgues. At a meeting at the Ministry of Health, senior government officials examined the problems leading to the delay in performing post-mortem. The morgues most seriously affected are at the Kingston Public Hospital, the Morgan’s and Spanish Town funeral homes in St Catherine, and Percy’s funeral home in St James. 1999:but First it was June,

now the Ministry of Transport says November 1 is the firm implementa­tion date for the seat-belt law. Minister Peter Phillips vows there will be no more extensions, in the face of alarming accident statistics. “We are ensuring that the message is disseminat­ed throughout the length and breadth of the island, including the schools,” says Phillips, who is speaking at the official installati­on of the Road Safety Unit’s new road safety sign at the intersecti­on of Cargill and Maxfield avenues. Some 250 road signs are to be erected across the island by Signtex Limited as part of the ministry’s road safety campaign to educate the public on the use of protective devices – seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, and childrestr­aint systems. Minister Phillips says the date of implementa­tion was changed to November 1 after consultati­on with the respective parties.
