THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on August 21 in the years identified:
1984:The
Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) calls on the prime minister to remove Minister of Education Mavis Gilmour from office. The call comes by way of two resolutions passed at the 20th Annual General Conference of the JTA at the Americana Hotel Ocho Rios.
One of the resolutions comes from the St Elizabeth Parish Association of the JTA and the other from the Jamaica Association of Teacher Educators (JATE). Both are strongly supported by the nearly 300 teacher delegates from across the island at the conference. That from the JATE is passed unanimously and the other is passed with two delegates abstaining. This is the second consecutive year that motions have been brought to the Annual General Conference of the JTA asking for the removal of Ms Gilmour as minister of education. 1984:Number Air Jamaica Flight
029 to Miami is delayed by over four hours at the Norman Manley Airport after the aircraft developed engine problems shortly after take-off. Air Jamaica personnel at the airport does not comment on the incident, except to say that information will be available from its public relations office on August 22. Two ambulances that are rushing to the airport, after an alarm goes out, turn back close to the Gun Boat Beach after being informed by the police that the aircraft had landed safely. The aircraft, which is believed to be an Airbus, had to land immediately after takeoff and repairs carried out on one of its engines. 1988:Development

Addressing party supporters at his East Kingston and Port Royal Constituency Conference at the Vauxhall Secondary School auditorium, he notes the developments in the waterfront area of Western Kingston and says that a PNP government will have to concentrate on central and eastern Kingston and the waterfront.
