Wholesome and rounded contestants for MUJ

-

THE MISS Universe Jamaica competition is viewed as a beauty competition. However, the organisers are fully aware that beauty is not just skin deep. As a result, for 2017, they are not only focusing on face and figure but the mental capabilities of the contestants.

Media and Recruitment Manager Shane Morgan noted that this year, they are placing more emphasis on the development of the queens. To ensure that they now have more rounded individuals, the contestants are now required to do movement and acting classes. Emphasis will also be placed on their charitable endeavours. “Movement classes are important because, while this includes dance, it will help the women to be more aware of their bodies as it pertains to their movement across the stage” he said.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE

“Acting, on the other hand, will help to build confidence because sometimes it is not that the women do not know what to say, but nervousness gets the upper hand. Along with confidence, it will help with self-expression with regard to emotions and speech,” he continued.

They have also revived their altruism project. According to Morgan, every contestant is tasked with identifying and working with a charitable organisation, exercising their social responsibility.

All these elements should result in making more rounded individuals, he believes. They are focusing much less on the public appearances and will be using that time to focus on developing more complete women.

The Gleaner-sponsored Miss Universe Jamaica 2017 Beauty, Fashion and Wellness, which will be held on August 26 at The Pegasus hotel, will also include a fashion show this year. Morgan looks forward to seeing a group of 17 exceptional young women vie for the coveted crown.
