Nevers: Stop overlooking males
VETERAN COACH Winston Nevers has said that he has no intentions of becoming head coach of Jamaica’s senior netball team at the moment as he is focused on continuing his work building his club team Jamalco’s programme.
Nevers, who has been coaching for over 30 years, said that although there are male coaches in the sport who have been doing well, Netball Jamaica has continually overlooked them.
“They definitely don’t want any males, and so I wouldn’t even mention any at this time,” Nevers told The Gleaner.
“But I think that males have been doing a good job over the years and can’t get a look in. So I know it (a male coach’s appointment) is not going to come any time soon – if it’s going to come to anything at all,” Nevers said.
Meanwhile, Nevers has backed interim coaches Sasher-Gaye Henry and Marvette Anderson to become successful with the Sunshine Girls but says that he would like to see an experienced campaigner working alongside them.
“I think they know the game and they know the netball more than the coach that resigned, but I would really love to see somebody more senior among them to really help to guide them because we can get what we want from these ladies,” he said.
He added: “I think that a name that I would suggest to really ... guide them is Annett Daley because I think she is someone who can help to bring the team as she knows what she is doing.”
Henry and Anderson were appointed interim coaches of the Sunshine Girls until the end of this year, following the resignation of Britain-born Jermaine Allison-McCracken on July 31.
Henry was Allison-McCracken’s assistant at the time of her resignation.
Nevers said Henry and Anderson are two of the country’s brightest young coaches, and he is confident that they will help to improve the Sunshine Girls’ fortunes alongside Daley, who has had a number of stints as assistant with the senior team in the past.
“I believe that they can do a pretty good job now because they can’t do worse than what happened between us and Barbados,” said Nevers.
Henry and Anderson are currently preparing the Sunshine Girls team for this year’s Fast5 Netball World Series, which will be held in Australia in October.
