Supreme Ventures’ Junior Creators Camp a success

-

SUPREME VENTURES has just wrapped the second staging of its Junior Creators Camp for children between the ages of 8 and 11. The camp, staged at Campion College, served to expose the participants who were from underserved communities to the exciting world of Lego and robotics.

The subject matter was taught, as it was in the first year, by Marvin Hall and his ‘Halls of Learning’ team. “We worked with Marvin last year and were so pleased with the impact he had on the participants that we asked him to do it again this year,” said Simone Clarke-Cooper, SVL’s AVP, group corporate communication. “Not only did the participants leave with more knowledge than they came with, but also with more confidence and a greater sense of self, having achieved success in this new subject area.”

Her point was underscored by Hall. “Yes, we wanted the children to learn about Lego and Robotics. But more importantly, we wanted them to understand that there were no limits to what they could do. We emphasised the fact that in learning, mistakes would be made, and that was fine once you tried again. We also made them work in pairs and in groups to stress the importance of teamwork and respect. They really left as better all-round people, and that’s truly the most rewarding part for us,” he said.

BENEFICIAL EXPERIENCE

As was the case last year, state minister in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, Floyd Green, visited the camp. He interacted with the technology, noting the pace at which it is changing, the importance of STEM to the future of Jamaica and the importance of a camp such as the Junior Creators Camp in preparing young minds to be a part of that future.

One hundred and twenty students from several primary schools in the Corporate Area benefited from the Junior Creators Camp experience, which began on August 14 and ended on August 25. At the end of each week, certificates of participation were given to all students, while trophies were given to the camp’s top performers.
