THIS DAY IN OUR PAST
The following events took place on September 11 in the years identified:
1990:Commercial
banks will play a key role in determining the rate of exchange under the liberalised exchange rate system. They will set their own rates based on the availability of dollars not taken out of the system by Government, for the Bank of Jamaica; and the average rate of the various commercial banks will determine the rate at which the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) deals in foreign exchange. The banks will no longer act as agents of the BoJ, in dealing with foreign exchange. Speaking in the House, P. J. Patterson says the Bank of Jamaica will also take a portion of the commercial banks’ foreign exchange receipts to make up for the shortfall in meeting official obligations. 2001:make Tivoli Gardens
a winning start to their 2001 Manning Cup campaign by overpowering St Jago 5-2 at the Railway Oval. Forward Rafick Thomas, who scores a hat-trick, is the main force behind his team’s win as he teased and tantalised the St Jago defence. Thomas’ goals come in the 10th, 50th and 51st minutes. There are also goals from Mardio McCarthy in the 31st minute and Orane Simpson from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute. Corey Graham hit back for his team in the 67th minute, while Howard Williams scores his teams second in the 71st minute. It is not the most attractive game of football but the ball wizardry of Thomas lifted what would have been a dull afternoon. His brilliance and goalscoring ability is what separated the two teams.
