Jamaica Gleaner

From humble beginnings to successful financial exemplar

-

IN MARCH of 1991, the thought of a credit union in a bank was not the most popular idea. I was recruited by NCB as part of the bank’s attempt to tap into the vast

resources of credit unions that were becoming a formidable competitor to the commercial banks.

When I asked Orville Johnson to join me in seeking permission from Mr Rex James, the then managing director, to establish a credit union for the benefit of the employees of National Commercial Bank, was the day that I proudly invested in the passion and drive to mobilise the grand idea into a reality.

Our inaugural general meeting was held on October 10, 1992, with a membership of 550 employees. Formally registered on August 17, 1992, with a starting share capital of J$398,000. It is not merely the fact that we organised a credit union, an institution of reputable standing, but we helped to enable our fellow colleagues to dream big, achieve more, protect their lives and assets and plan for their children and loved ones.

To this end, I salute the team and the calibre of persons who continue to work at NCBECCU. Thank you to our valued members, management and staff for 25 wonderful years in our God-blessed country – Jamaica. Norman Vickers First chairman of the board of NCB Employees Cooperative Credit Union
