Schoolboy collapses in Manning Cup clash
St Mary’s College player regains consciousness after being rushed to hospital
THERE WAS a scare yesterday at Alpha Institute, where St Mary’s College defender Shandaye Edwards collapsed on the field after a collision with a Camperdown player during their Group C ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup encounter.
Edwards, who, up to last night, was reportedly speaking and functioning normally, was, according to reports, falling in and out of consciousness after being rushed to St Joseph’s Hospital shortly after the incident. He was later transferred to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where he was expected to undergo further tests.
Camperdown would eventually run out as comfortable winners. Rantano Roberts turned in a brilliant first half display as he netted a hat-trick to lead the former champions to an effortless 9-0 victory.
The 17-year-old Roberts, who was taken off by his coach, Christopher Bender, at halftime, netted his goals in the 15th, 21st, and 33rd minutes for Camperdown.
DELIGHTED PERFORMANCE
With five goals to his name this season, Roberts was delighted with his performance.
“I just went out and did what my coach told me to do in training, and so I am very happy with the three goals,” said Roberts, a supporter of English Premier League side Liverpool.
Roberts also shared the reason
why he was taken off by Bender at half-time.
“I think my coach took me
[off] because he didn’t want me to pick up any injuries because we have two very important matches coming up against Cumberland and Hydel, and we need to win both games,” Roberts said.
He received support from substitute Malik Mills, who scored a double in the 87th and 90th minutes.
Captain Tumekie Blackwood (7th), Jevon Miller (48th), Shaquiel Backford (75), and an own goal by St Mary’s College’s Shackiez Fuller in the 89th added to the scoreline.
Despite their huge victory, Camperdown have slipped to second in the group on goal difference behind Hydel, who
thrashed Cumberland 8-1 in their assignment yesterday. Both teams are 15 points each, however, Hydel have a game in hand.
Donovan Lofters, assistant coach of Camperdown, said they would be going all out for victory in both games in their bid to top the group.
“We have two crucial games that we need to win – first at Cumberland and then against Hydel. And so once we win those games, then we will top the group,” said Lofters.
Meanwhile, Group D leaders St George’s College, were made to sweat for their 2-1 victory over Kingston Technical.
