The AWG helping Jamaican youth
THE AMERICAN Women’s Group (AWG) recently held their annual luncheon, showcasing their long-standing assistance to Jamaican youth.
It was an intimate group that gathered at the Grogge Shoppe restaurant at the historic Devon House to hear the reports, and admittedly, this group has been very good Samaritans.
They currently offer scholarships to more than 18 Jamaican students, and increase from the 10 they offered last year. One of recipients who came to share her story, was aspiring paediatrician Mickalia McKoy.
She had always made the grade, and when her mother learnt about the scholarship programme offered by the American Women’s Group she applied in faith. Melbourne Douglas, who is now managing director of his own company – FyahFull Entertainment Company Limited – was also assisted by the group from second to sixth form. Now a university graduate, he volunteers his services to the group as its first male member, as he would like to be a part of the group that
helped to make him the man he is today.
The guest speaker, or rather, the motivational speaker for the day was wife of the prime minister, Juliet Holness, member of parliament for East Rural St Andrew, who spoke on why women are so beneficial to growth. She used the word ‘milk’ to represent – mentorship, intervention, leadership and kinship. All of these factors provide the ‘milk’ Jamaica needs to flourish. She also commended the AWG on their efforts.
The meeting concluded with a delicious fare, courtesy of the Grogge Shoppe, who not only hosted but catered the event. Women caught up, and grabbed their selfies with Holness before returning to their normal afternoon routines.
