Cornwall missed too many chances –Weatherly
COACH OF Cornwall College Dr Dean Weatherly said that too many chances went begging after watching his team play out a 1-1 draw with Zone A leaders St James High at Jarrett Park yesterday in their ISSA-FLOW daCosta Cup contest.
“I think the boys gave me a creditable performance. In the first half, too many chances went begging and we paid the price for that as we had to come from behind to secure a point. This is a game that you have to take your chances when presented, and we did not do that.
“Each time we missed, we brought St James High into the game because we could have easily finished the game from in the first half, where too many chances went begging,” said Weatherly of the clash that saw St James’s Akeem Smith (69th minute) and Cornwall’s Pagiel Brown (88th) getting on the scoresheet.
Weatherly told The Sunday Gleaner in a pre-game interview that this was a must-win game for them to top the zone and get among the best seeding but they seem to be falling short as they are still behind their rivals on goal difference. He, however, remains optimistic as he intends to win all other games and is hoping that the team can make up the goal difference deficit.
“We just have to wait and see what happens down the road, where we have to score a lot of
goals to top the zone,” said Weatherly.
With both teams tied on 13 points, St James High coach Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore said that he is not worried about the seeding, noting that his primary focus is getting out of the First Round. He also made mention of not letting complacency creep into a situation that he described as a cat and mouse game.
“The most important thing is for us to leave the zone – whether we finish top or as runners-up – so we have to keep winning games,” said Whitmore, who is also the head coach of Jamaica’s national senior football team.”We don’t want to get complacent by leading the zone because if any of us (Cornwall and St James) falter, Maldon and Anchovy are right there.”
The St Elizabeth derby featuring St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) and Munro College was rescheduled to 4 p.m. after Munro rejected the original 6 p.m. start time, complaining that they did not want to play under recently installed lights at the STETHS Sports Complex as they believed that it would give the home team an unfair advantage.
STETHS would go on to win 2-1.
